The Taoist Christian Path: Embracing Simplicity and Spiritual Wisdom

Well, now, this thing they call Christian Taoist, it’s a bit of a head-scratcher, ain’t it? You got one foot in the Christian faith and the other in Taoism, two different things that ain’t easy to mix, if you ask me. But somehow, folks been talking about it more and more these days. You see, Christianity’s all about believing in one big boss, God, and Taoism’s about living in harmony with the Tao, which is like the flow of nature or something like that. Both of ’em got their own ideas, but they do have a few things in common, like the way they want people to live good, peaceful lives. But let me tell ya, it’s a lot to wrap your head around!

Now, Taoism, well, it’s real old, comes from China and talks about living in tune with nature. They say if you follow the Tao, life just flows better. It’s like trying to float down a river instead of fighting against the current. The Tao is everywhere, in everything, they say, and you can’t force it. It’s all about just being. It’s simple, really, but complicated too, if you know what I mean.

On the other hand, Christianity has a different sort of way. Christians believe in one God who’s got everything under control. You’re supposed to follow Jesus and his teachings, which mostly have to do with love, kindness, and helping others. They say if you believe in Jesus, you’ll be saved, and that’s how you get close to God. So, you see, right off the bat, they’re a bit different, ’cause Christians believe in a personal relationship with God, while Taoists believe in being one with the universe.

But, here’s the thing: folks who are into Christian Taoism, they say that you can mix a bit of both. You can live like a Christian, loving others and following Jesus, but at the same time, you can live simply and in harmony with the natural world like the Taoists do. Some folks think Jesus himself might’ve been a bit like a Taoist, you know, the way he taught about peace and love, about letting go and trusting in the flow of life. There’s even talk that he might’ve been a “sage,” like one of them wise Taoist teachers, though I ain’t sure about all that.

The more I think on it, the more it makes sense. We all want to live good lives, don’t we? We want peace, we want love, and we want to get along with folks. Whether you’re a Christian or a Taoist, ain’t that what it’s all about? Folks in both of these traditions talk about humility too, and I reckon that’s something we could all stand to learn a bit more of. Being humble, living simple, and being kind to others—sounds like good advice to me.

It’s not so much about what religion you follow, but how you live your life, I suppose. Some people reckon you can live a good life by mixing the wisdom of both Christianity and Taoism. Maybe it’s not so strange after all, putting those two together. Both want you to live a life full of peace, humility, and love. I think that’s something we all could use a bit more of in this crazy world of ours.

Some folks, though, they get all tangled up in the differences. “You can’t be both!” they say. But, who knows? Maybe there’s room for both. After all, it ain’t about the labels we wear but how we live, right? And if following Jesus and living in tune with nature helps you live a peaceful life, then maybe that’s just fine. There’s no harm in trying to find harmony in all things. Maybe that’s what being a Christian Taoist is all about—finding peace and balance in this crazy world we live in.

So, if you ask me, being a Christian Taoist ain’t such a bad idea. You live in the world, love folks, help folks, and try to stay humble, just like the Tao says. And you follow Jesus, too, doing your best to love your neighbor and spread good in the world. If you ask me, they’re both on the same page when it comes to living a good life. And that’s all that matters in the end, don’t you think?
